Agency for Ballet/Dance and Scene

Nick Hobbs

Nick Hobbs was born in London, England. Before beginning his dance training he played many sports – dedicating most of his time to Rugby and playing on an international level.
Upon the recommendation of Pam Howard MBE, he re-focused his physicality toward dance. This led to him to starting his training at the Northern School of Contemporary of Dance, completing this at the London Studio Centre.
From 1996-1999, he was engaged at the Stadttheater Koblenz under the direction of Tony Taylor. During this time he met and worked with Martin Schläpfer who was re-staging two of his works for the company. Through this initial contact came the offer to join the newly formed ballettmainz.
From 1999-2009 Nick not only danced in most world premieres of Martin Schläpfer but was also to be seen in the works of Hans van Manen, Nils Christie, Kurt Joss, Sijn Celis and Gisela Rocha amongst others.
He was also given the opportunity to start creating works of his own. Being appointed to the position of choreographer in residence enabled him to dedicate more time on developing his choreographic work and language. During his time in Mainz he created six works for the company and received the Förderpreis des Kunstprises Rheinland-Pfalz.
As a guest Nick has been invited to create work for Stadttheater Koblenz, Theater Bonn, Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and St. Gallen, Switzerland.
He is presently working on an original Opera with friend and composer Paul Pavey.
His next creation will be for Tanz Luzerner Theater which he will present alongside a re-staging of ‘come to pass’, his first creation for ballettmainz.
Nick Hobbs is based in Switzerland.
