Demis Volpi

Demis Volpi was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the age of four he began his ballet training, two years later he was trained by Andrea Candela. Since 1995 he has been training with Wilhelm Burmann from time to time. During the years 1995 to 1999 Demis Volpi also worked together with Mario Gallizi. In 1999 he was a student at the Escuela de Danza del Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón. Afterwards he went to the National Ballet School of Canada in Toronto and graduated in 2002. From 2002 to 2004 he attended the John Cranko School in Stuttgart where he received the Academy Diploma. He became an apprentice with the Stuttgart Ballet in the 2004/05 season. In the following season he was taken into the Corps de ballet. Since joining the Stuttgart Ballet Demis Volpi has danced both classical and mondern repertoire and Demis Volpi has had roles created for him by Marco Goecke in Sweet Sweet Sweet, Viciouswishes, Goecke at the Chamber: The Nutcracker and Orlando as well as in Two at a time by Cayetano Soto.
Since 2006 Demis Volpi has started to work as a choreographer: He created four works for the Noverre Society’s “Young Choreographers”: on and on and on (May 2006), swish (June 2007) and palpable leers (July 2008). His latest ballet for the Noverre-Society, from me to you, premiered in July 2009 in the Schauspielhaus Stuttgart. His ballets were all very well received and in 2007 Demis Volpi was named in the category “Young choreographer to watch” in the critics’ choice of ballettanz. on and on and on was shown again at the Stuttgart Ballet’s annual benefit matinée “Aktion Weihnachten” in December 2006. In 2007 swish was taken into the Stuttgart Ballet’s repertoire and was shown in the mixed repertory evening CHOREOGRAPHIE AUS STUTTGART as well as in 2009 on occasion of “Aktion Weihnachten”. Demis Volpi also created spinto (February 2007) on dancers of the Stuttgart Ballet for the ochestra association’s gala “Musik und Ballett” at the Liederhalle, Stuttgart. For the gala on occasion of the 60’s birthday of Ballet Director Reid Anderson on April 1st 2009, Demis Volpi created The Broadway Baby together with Bridget Breiner. His first commissioned work for the Stuttgart Ballet, Big Blur, premiered on March 31st in the Play House Theatre Stuttgart. For the John Cranko School Demis Volpi created Karneval der Tiere which premiered in December 2010 during the “Aktion Weihnachten” in the Opera House in Stuttgart and was extremely good received by the audience. In March 2011 there were two World Premieres by Demis Volpi to be seen: For the competition for The Erik Bruhn Prize the Pas de deux Little Monsters was premiered on March 5th 2011 – and Demis Volpi did with the prize for the best choreography. On March 12th 2011 Dancers of the Baden State Theater in Karlsruhe presented the commissioned work Capricen during the mixed bill “Romantik”. A highlight in fall 2011 was his world premiere “Private Light” for American Ballet Theatre in New York. In 2012 he has so far created “Hypnotic Poison” for Ballet Augsburg and currently his “Carneval for the animals” is being staged to the school of Hamburg Ballet.
Demis Volpi has also worked with the State Opera Stuttgart. In 2008 he was commissioned to choreograph for the opera La Juive (production and dramaturgy: Jossi Wieler, Sergio Morabito) and again in May 2009 for the opera Teseo (production: Igor Bauersima).
